What do magnetic wedges do in the engine?
Magnetic wedges are placed in the slots of the rotor or stator, where they perform several critical functions:
- Fixation of windings or permanent magnets: They reliably prevent slippage or loosening under high speeds and mechanical loads.
- Electrical insulation (for plastic versions): They protect against short circuits and ensure safe, low-loss power transmission.
- Mechanical stabilization: They increase the structural integrity of the engine and contribute to long-term operational reliability.
Plastic-based magnetic wedges (GRP / thermosets)
Our insulating magnetic wedges made of glass fiber-reinforced plastics or thermoset composite materials offer numerous advantages – especially for applications with high thermal and electrical requirements:
- Electrically insulating – ideal for preventing winding short circuits
- Temperature resistant up to 180 °C
- Compatible with insulation classes F and H
- High mechanical strength and fatigue strength
- Suitable for traction motors, generators, industrial drives and e-mobility
Metal magnetic wedges (e.g. steel or magnetic sheet)
We also offer conductive metal magnetic wedges for special drive concepts. This variant is particularly suitable where magnetic conductivity is required – for example for targeted field guidance in the rotor:
- Magnetically conductive, not electrically insulating
- Extremely robust and mechanically highly resilient
- Can be used in special machines, rotors with integrated magnetic guidance or field-controlled systems
- Compatible with insulation classes F and H
